The Peranakan also known as?the?Babas and Nyonyas, was a prominent community of acculturated Chinese, especially in the Straits Settlements (Penang, Malacca and Singapore) hence its other name, the Straits Chinese. The Straits Settlements were originally Malay Sultanate areas that were occupied by the British Empire in the 18th and 19th Centuries. In Indonesia the assimilation process that created the Peranakans begin in the 15th century and after the massacre of Chinese by the VOC in 1749. The descendants and Immigrants from southern China who married the locals then started their own community and developed a mixed-culture which is called the "Peranakans".
The unique Peranakan custom also is reflected in the Straits Chinese Porcelain used by the "Nyonyas" or "Nyonya Ware" as it is often called. While normal Chinese porcelain uses a minimal palette of colors for their porcelain, "Nyonya Ware" uses crowded decorations rendered in a sharp contrast of colors, usually with Phoenix and Peony motifs. The Nyonyas' taste of colors was not restricted to porcelain, but also evident in the riots of colors of the kebayas and sarongs they wore.
Ghea, being of mixed-ethnic heritage herself, born from an Indonesian Father and Dutch mother has always?been inspired by the beauty of the diversity and the lifestyle of the Chinese Peranakan community. Being inspired so many times by the kebayas, sarongs and clothing worn by the "Nyonyas", this time Ghea is inspired by the colorful motifs and vibrant decorations of the porcelains that have delighted the Nyonyas during the days and have beenn?used through? the generations of the Peranakan society. Ghea translated the vibrant and festive "Nyonya Ware"?porcelain into a collection of Tea Sets and Dinnerware in romantic and fashionable colors for modern homes.
